Trump Weighs Federal Gas Tax Suspension Amid Surging Fuel Prices
President Trump confirmed he is considering a temporary pause on the federal gas tax to relieve driver costs at the pump ahead of the November midterm elections.

COLUMBUS, OH | President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that his administration is exploring a potential suspension of the federal gasoline tax as elevated fuel prices continue to burden drivers nationwide. When asked by reporters whether he would consider waiving the tax, Trump responded, "We're thinking about that," noting concerns over the impact of high gas and diesel prices on consumers.
The federal gas tax currently adds 18.4 cents per gallon to gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon to diesel. While a temporary tax holiday would offer immediate price relief at the pump, executing the pause requires congressional approval. Lawmakers remain divided on the proposal, as federal fuel taxes directly fund national highway infrastructure and public transit projects.
